THE OVERVIEW

This is a spectacular small group journey encompassing the best of the spectacular Kimberley region. Travel up the Dampier Peninsula and learn firsthand of the exotic pearling industry and cruise the pristine waters of the Buccaneer Archipelago.
Then traverse the inspiring Kimberley outback whilst visiting remote towns, viewing native wildlife and walking spectacular gorges.

travelers seeking a Kimberley experience that is culturally rewarding in a beautiful environment. Hear about the areas fascinating
place in Australia’s history from our guided commentary. Enjoy a restaurant lunch at Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm prior to joining a
fascinating Farm Tour learning about the world’s largest and most beautiful pearls that have been farmed in these waters for
generations, by the family-owned business. Later this afternoon we take to the waters on a cruise in the picturesque Buccaneer
Archipelago* (subject to weather conditions).

DAY 2 – DERBY

This morning, we visit Ardyaloon before making our way back to the highway and heading north to Derby.

After breakfast visit the remote Aboriginal community of Ardyaloon (One Arm Point) & enjoy the view over the stunning coastline, (subject to access and seasonal opening). Leaving Cape Leveque Road, we head north on Highway One, arriving in the small outback town of Derby in the afternoon. Today e onto the Gibb and drive towards beautiful Windjana Gorge before heading to Tunnel Creek.

This morning we’ll visit the famous Boab Prison Tree and learn of the harsh treatment the local Aboriginal people endured during early colonisation. We then begin our journey on the iconic cattle track, the Gibb River Road, travelling through the remote and beautiful landscape of the Western Kimberley and hearing stories of early settlement in this region. Arriving at the Napier Range, once a Devonian reef these escarpments are over 350 million years old and home to a diverse array of animals and plants, we set out on an easy walk to the geological wonder of Bandilgnan (Windjana Gorge). After lunch we and explore Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek), a 750- metre cave system carved through the Range, in which we discover stalactites, secret caves and magical views. It is here we also learn the legend of Jandamarra, an Aboriginal freedom fighter who used the tunnel as a hide out in the late 1800’s. As the sun sets, we continue our drive through the Oscar Range and groves of majestic Boab trees, before arriving at our comfortable accommodation on the banks of the Fitzroy River.

We have ample time to explore this extraordinary World Heritage protected Purnululu National Park, the most famous site being the
Bungle Bungles domes. Rivers created this landscape of unique orange and black striped ‘beehive’ geological formations over a period of 20 million years. Unbelievably, only the locals knew it existed until the early 1980’s; once discovered by others, the area was made a national park in 1987. We take a guided walk (2-3km) along Picanniny Creek to the lookout and then into stunning Cathedral Gorge, where towering rocks create a natural Amphitheatre. This afternoon we have the option of an inspiring scenic helicopter flight over the Bungle Bungles that will surely be a highlight of your trip. This evening views a sensational sunset enjoying drinks & nibbles.

A walk up the creek bed is rewarded with bird’s eye views of the shaded escarpment where we learnt how the chasm received its name from an Aboriginal dreamtime story. For the energetic, there may also be the possibility of an extended walk through the bloodwoods around the base of the massif. After a picnic lunch say goodbye to the Bungle Bungles and head back onto the Spring Creek track before heading east to Kununurra where our journey commences.

  • Departures and itineraries are subject to change, regional weather conditions & road closures: Indigenous communities & activities may be closed or cancelled with little notice due to cultural or other reasons

  • Some itineraries involve some clambering over rocks, through water & walking on un-even ground. A reasonable level of fitness is advised however options can be arranged to suit most guests abilities.

  • The Kimberley climate during our touring season coincides with ‘the Dry’. Generally the temperature ranges between 28-32º C during the day & may drop down to below 6º C during the night. It may be considerably warmer during September & October as ‘the Wet’ approaches.
  • South West climate is generally Mediterranean, with cool & wet Winters & hotter dry Summers.
